Doña Ana County Launches Safe Haven Baby Box for Newborn Surrender
Doña Ana County Fire Rescue has introduced its first Safe Haven Baby Box at Station 42 in Anthony, New Mexico, offering parents a secure and anonymous way to surrender infants under 30 days old. This initiative, marked by a dedication ceremony, aims to provide a compassionate alternative for parents in crisis, ensuring that help is always accessible. The temperature-controlled box is designed to alert emergency services immediately upon use, with features that guarantee the infant's safety until responders arrive. This installation is the 13th in New Mexico and the 409th nationwide, reflecting a growing response to the needs of parents who may fear face-to-face interactions. Officials emphasize that this program is about giving infants a chance at a loving family while addressing the issue of unsafe abandonments.
